Stephen's slimming success

Stephen’s story

When Stephen joined One You Leeds back in June 2018, he was overweight with type 2 diabetes. He had heard about our services when visiting his local GP. His GP suggested that he needed to make lifestyle changes to become healthier, to help with his diabetes and high blood pressure.

The plan

Stephen decided to join three of our programmes: Move More, Adult Weight Management and Cook Well. This was due to his challenging target of losing 18kg (2st 11lb) in only 12 weeks. The plan created for him included attending a walking group and an exercise class each week, changing his eating habits and cooking more nutritious meals.

Results

Stephen’s increase in physical exercise, paired with improving his diet, led to a dramatic weight loss that exceeded his own expectations. Having set a target of 18kg, Stephen actually lost 33kg (5st 2lb) through a combination of Move More, Adult Weight Management and Cook Well. Consequently, his BMI moved into the healthy range (18.5 and 24.9), having previously been considered obese (with a BMI of 35.3**)**. As a result, Stephen no longer needs his diabetes medicine and has had his blood pressure medication reduced.

The Move More classes have meant that Stephen can now walk much further without pain or shortness of breath. And the Cook Well and Adult Weight Management classes have helped him to cook healthier, more nutritious meals and change his eating habits.

Where is Stephen now?

It’s been over a year and a half since Stephen joined One You Leeds and he is still active. Stephen goes to the gym 2-3 times a week, in addition to two One You Leeds Move More classes a week.

Completing the One You programmes has led to Stephen making healthy lifestyle changes, which means that he has implemented long-term healthier choices, rather than a short-term fix.

Stephen intends to continue his current physical activity and lifestyle changes and has joined a men’s social group since he found the friends he made on the One You programmes incredibly motivating.
